What is meant by Complex Event Processing (CEP)?

Complex event processing is a technique of tracking and analyzing streams of information or complex data streams or events with a goal to discover opportunities, insights or threats in real-time, that are hard to find from the high-volume of data from different sources.

CEP is commonly associated with streaming processing engines and identifying complex patterns and dependencies in the incoming data in real-time.

Where is it used? - Complex Event Processing Use-cases:

  • Predictive Maintenance : Sensors fitted on objects, equipment in manufacturing facilities collect data continuously that reveal patterns of abnormal activities for a predictive maintenance
  • Real-time Marketing : Marketers rely on CEP systems that reveal opportunities to interact with customers in a better way, by presenting real-time offers.
  • Business Activity Monitoring : CEP systems enable businesses by identifying opportunities and problems at early stages by continuous monitoring of critical resources.

General requirements for a CEP system to identify important information:

  • At Least one event
  • The latest event state from all the sources
  • Past data (historical data record) in each source of data
  • Aggregation of data from all the sources
